I really don't know. One of the marketing ploys the karaoke companies use is to introduce new "brands" every so often. They have found that it they put out the same old c**ap under a different name everyone will try it at least once. This is only about the 12th such new 'brand' that I have seen. As soon as everyone 'trys' the new 'brand' they will come up with a new new brand.
Think back . Did you say to your self "Gee self, these are only $16.99 !!! I think I will give them a try! And did you say the same thing about Northstar, Big Country, Big Hitz, Neutech, Standing O, Stardisc, Backstage, Keynote, (you get the picture). Just remember there are really only like 5 karaoke companies and there are actually like 3 less now than there were 2 years ago. They are dropping like flys not multiplying like rabbits.
I say stick with Sound Choice and you will know what you are getting. (Yes we have sold a bunch of bht and no we have not gotten any back) But we have really had the devil's own time with their horrific customer service and failure to deliver goods ordered)
I enjoyed writing this so much that I am going to submit
it to www.karaokex.com .

RE: IMPORTANT CHANGES
To My Loyal Customers,
2005 was a year of changes in the karaoke industry. Priddis Music has not escaped the pressures that have forced these adjustments. This letter is to formally announce the following changes, beginning January 16th, 2006.
Discontinued Priddis Product. Priddis Music discs, for the most part, will be phased out during 2006. Ultimately, a handful of titles will remain available. We will notify you as discs are discontinued. After the first of the year, Priddis discs will not be returnable for credit. You may exchange Priddis discs, which you paid for and were not free add-ons, for other Priddis discs which have not yet been discontinued.
New Label. The Priddis catalog of music is being re-released under the ProSound Karaoke label. Priddis has licensed the use of it’s logos to ProSound. These logos will be on the ProSound packaging, minus the “priddis” name, so the product is recognizable to our existing customers. Only the most popular songs from the Priddis Catalog will be re-released under the ProSound label.
New Releases. New releases of fresh, new music will begin under the ProSound label starting January, 2006. This will be the same quality music our customers have come to expect.
Distribution. Beginning January 16th, 2006, Priddis discs and the new ProSound Karaoke discs will no longer be available directly from Priddis Music. Dealers and distributors may order the discs through ProSing, 6365 53rd Street • Suite B, Pinellas Park, FL 33781. For your convenience, our current toll free phone numbers will be rerouted to begin ringing at ProSing.
I thank you for your years of loyalty to the Priddis line of product and your willingness to accept these adjustments. I look forward to greater success, for you and for me, with the new ProSound Karaoke line of discs. I will be available at the NAMM show at ProSing booth #7018, as will Dale Miller - owner of ProSing, to answer any questions or concerns you may have.
Many thanks,
Whether you believe that Santa shredded them or the Tooth Fairy , they are going to be shredded and I am 99% certain that the new line will be 100% licenced. Are we going to carry the new line? (where I work that is) Well yes. The vast majority of my customers loved Top Tunes and it has always been a profitable line. Do I mind selling them for the same price as Wal Mart ? No (We sell way more per store than they do any way. ((well they do have like 5000 stores and we have like 4 )))
So who cares and what does it mean to Joe 6 pack at the Oasis Bar? I
leave that to you.
At this time there are not plans to make a karaoke disk part of the Wal Mart offering. (as far as I have heard)
Please tell all of your karaoke friends to contact Garth thru his management team and tell him your thoughts on the subject. (see below)
If you send an email put the word 'karaoke' in the subject so that they can direct all of the email to a special folder. We want they to get the idea but we want them to be able to keep all the email in one folder so it isn't a problem.

Garth Brooks's New Label
New York Times:
Within months of parting company with his longtime label, Capitol/EMI,
and setting up exclusive distribution with Wal-Mart Stores, Garth
Brooks, country's all-time leading album seller, will be back on country
radio this fall with a new label for radio promotion, the Lyric Street
division of the Walt Disney Company. Lyric Street, which announced
the move in a news release yesterday in Nashville, has been hired by Anderson
Merchandisers, a leading distributor for big-box retailers including Wal-Mart,
to promote Mr. Brooks's comeback single, "Good Ride Cowboy." The song is
a tribute to the rodeo star and country singer Chris LeDoux, who was a
real hero to Mr. Brooks and died this year. The move is further evidence
that ABC and Disney see the long-term prospects in country music:
ABC earlier this year purchased the broadcast rights, beginning in 2006,
for the Country Music Association awards show, which has been broadcast
on CBS for decades. PHIL SWEETLAND
Ok I am back from lunch. I will say that much of the Music Maestro library is still available on Easy Karaoke in store machines. I deal with all of the karaoke compaies on a daily basis and let me say that we will all miss Music Maestro. Maestro was a company with a solid service bassed philosophy . Many flashy companies are all about bringing out 'RedneckWoman' or the newest mega hits . What ever will sell a bunch of disks fast. Music Maestro was more dedicated to offering a depth of selection including music for everybody, disks that would still be played next month when the latest 'teen hits' has an inch and a half of dust on it. Music Maestro was one of the only disk makers that did not also try to sell direct to the customer and of all the disc companies they had fewer discontinued titles (a certain sign of a dedication to service and a regard for the customers)
In one man's humble opinion, the closing of Music Maestro was more of a personal decition than a matter of it loosing money. I don't know but that is the impression that I got on the phone.
Caryn (obvious misspelling of the name Karen) is still involved in the karaoke industry , working with Easy Karaoke instore direct to disk burners.
If anyone has read the Reader's Digest article about Blogs and understands
what a blog is , please email me and tell me what I have to do to be a
blog master. (I saw the thing on 60 minutes and still don't know what it
is. Just that that fat woman was ticking off those liberals and they said
she didn't have the right to say all the stuff she was saying . Wait a
minute if they are really liberals don't they want her to be able to do
whatever she wants to ? as long as she don't have a gun or say anything
bad about Hillary or good about Martha that is) *
*Look I am just trying to be funny here. I don't have a dog in this fight . I'm too busy singing to put anybody down. Please don't send me any mail about guns, Hillary , Martha, 60 Minutes, reading on the toilet,The Dixie Chicks, Suzan Surranden, Obesity, liberals, gun control, 4th amendment , 1st amendment , any of the commandments or whatever the D senator from wherever was trying to sneak past the legislature. Just a joke ! All I want to talk about here is karaoke. Just a joke ok? No mame, leave Rush Limbaugh out of it (unless he starts singing karaoke)
I think that I need more emails from you guys and I then need to put them on the site to be more blogish. So send me email .
Oh yes and if any of the karaoke companies want to offer me big bucks for linking to their sites. Hey bring it on baby!!! Or on line casinos or pharmacies. (nothing nasty though like foot feitish sites or the like)
Legal issues lead to industry upheaval—and everybody loses
You know, it’s a shame that something so simple has to be made so difficult.
When I started my karaoke business over twelve years ago, karaoke was just
beginning a comeback. The old twelve-inch laser discs were dying out and
the new CDG format was making it easier and cheaper for us second generation
karaoke jocks to jump in ring. About all you had to choose from was the
original DK Karaoke library of roughly 65 discs—more than enough music
for any singer to choose from. It was a pretty simple way to help patrons
have fun, and make a little extra cash.
Now, a little over a decade later, it’s all getting really muddy. There
are a dozen or more karaoke software manufacturers, (some have come and
gone) all competing for your business, all producing their own renditions
of the same songs. And no longer do you, the working KJ, have an exclusive
on the business. Every singer that has visited one of your shows and either
didn’t get to sing enough, or thought they could do it better than you,
has gone out and bought a cheap system and picked up some cheap discs,
or worse, borrowed a set and burned them. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for
competition; it keeps us on our toes. But we are living in a world today
where many will opt to make a buck selfishly, without regard to who may
really paying the price.
Economic Prediction: A Major Cost-of-Singing Increase
And the news on the karaoke front is evidence of things coming to a
potential ugly head before it’s all over. Several of today’s popular karaoke
software companies have either closed their doors, are on the brink, or
are bound up in litigation fighting others. The family-run Music Maestro,
founded in 1988, and claiming to be “the first American company to develop
and distribute CDGs,” ceased producing new discs this past spring. Priddis
Music, a solid name in the karaoke business for over twenty years, is struggling.
And Sybersound Records (PartyTyme Karaoke) is suing several karaoke disc
makers in an attempt to maintain their retail market share.
At the center of the storm are those ever-controversial copyright laws.
What a surprise! But where previously, we only heard about shady companies
being caught in illegal business practices, now, the holders of music copyrights
seem to be going on the offensive, reaching for a bigger piece of the pie.
Legitimate software manufacturers, those that comply with the regulations
the recording industry has put forth to govern the production of karaoke
versions, have been operating under the Compulsory License Act for sound
recordings. The music publishers have accepted those payments for years
from the legit companies. But now, “Under the guise of fighting piracy
and copyright infringement, music publishers are strong-arming unfair fees
from licensed and royalty-paying karaoke companies to the tune of millions
of dollars,” according to Rick Priddis, president of Priddis Music, Inc.
When Priddis started his business, he produced cassettes with the song
lyrics printed on paper. Mechanical or compulsory licenses were acquired
for the recordings and reprint licenses for the lyrics. Priddis Music’s
business was based on the terms of the Compulsory License Act and similar
mechanical licensing through the publishers’ agent, the Harry Fox Agency.
When technology changed from cassette to CD, Priddis and other karaoke
producers changed the lyrics from paper to a TV screen. The ability to
have the lyrics change automatically on-screen made karaoke singing easier
and even more enjoyable for participants. But it has ultimately provided
the publishers with a legal—and potentially lethal—weapon against the karaoke
companies.
“The publishers don’t seem to like the Compulsory License Act because
it limits their control and regulates what they can charge,” Priddis says.
“With new technology for distributing music, the publishers have found
a loophole in the outdated compulsory statutes and are using it like a
sword. They are evading the ‘pay-as-you-go’ terms of compulsory licensing
and are demanding synchronization fees because they claim the lyrics on
the TV screen are “synched up” with the music. Now we are being told that
we have to re-license all of our songs under synchronization licenses—with
one-time up-front fees of up to $1,000 a song—or face litigation. In our
business, we have to keep as many songs as possible in our catalogues,
whether or not they sell well. With the prospect of re-licensing thousands
of songs at a cost of millions of dollars, I don’t know too many legitimate
karaoke companies who can pay that kind of money and keep their doors open.”
Time for Legal Self-Defense?
And while some are some are throwing in the towel, or contemplating
their next move, at least one company is going after the illegitimate companies,
those that manufacture without complying to any licensed regulations, and
are probably the ones that created this mess to begin with. Sybersound
Records, makers of the popular PartyTyme Karaoke and Billboard Top 10 Karaoke
brands, has filed suit alleging that some of their competitors have failed,
unlawfully, to license competing karaoke records, and have underreported
sales to publishers as a way of selling product below cost and undercutting
Sybersound's pricing. These below-cost sales amount to unfair trade practices,
according to the suit. Jan Stevens, President and CEO of Sybersound says,
"This has plagued the karaoke business for a long time. We've always been
scrupulous about paying writers for the use of their songs, and have expected
that our competitors would do the same. It's time for the rest of the industry
to do the right thing, and we hope that our lawsuit will help make this
happen."
So the next time someone asks you to burn them a “special disc with
their favorite songs,” or you decide to make a copy of your library so
you can field a second system, or the club owner tells you he’s replacing
you with a cheaper show and you learn the jock has 10,000 songs on a laptop
that he downloaded off the internet, remember this: “The great irony in
all of this is that the publishers, while claiming their actions are trying
to root out pirates and willful infringers, are making sure that only the
pirates will survive,” predicts Rick Priddis. “The true infringers have
never paid fees and never will. If this continues, those of us who have
paid fees and royalties all along will be forced out of business, and then
everybody loses.”
www.mobilebeat.com
Let me splain: Karaokestar and many other internet companies pay www.overture.com for better placement on their index. An index is like google. It's is how you find a web site that is relevant to what you are interested. You go to google or overture or yahoo or dogpile and put in a search word . Then you hit enter and supposedly you see a list of the sites that are most relevant to that word (say karaoke) .That seems fair . Some big unbiased computer (like HAL or Colossus or Data from Startreck) gives the rational list of karaoke sites. (PLOT thickens) but some of theses "indexes" sell the placement to the highest bidder (pretty woman, Xavier Hollander, Chicken ranch, your local street walker ) . As a matter of fact overture's first 30 some odd listings are 'sponsored' and the word 'karaoke' is selling for $1.78 a click right now. Karaokestar thinks that some of their unscrupulous competitors are just sitting around clicking on the link to cost them $1.78 a click. Just to be mean. (there is a little place on the overture search page to click at the top of the page that shows you how much a company is paying per click)
Helpful hint: If xyz-karaoke sent you Geek favorite karaoke hits by mistake and won't take it back, Go to www.overture.com and click on the link to their site. (one time is really all that counts because overture has safe guards to keep idiots from clicking multiple times or so they say (but trust me there are probably ways to fool the safeguards) It will cost them like a dollar.
So they have hired a lawyer to fire off various warning shots to 'everyone in the karaoke "industry" ' warning that they are going to figure out who the 'fraudulent clickers' are and 'take appropriate legal action' .
Now this all seems rather trivial until you look at the numbers involved. Lets say that one out of ten clickers actually buys something. (High estimate in my humble opinion) times $1.78 = $17.80 . That is $17.80 per new sale. The company that I work for paid out $180,000 in pay to play clicks in 2001 . We finally figured out that while we were selling lots of disks , we were loosing money. And we decided to lower prices and give better service rather than pay $20+ per new customer. And hope that we would get more customers by word of mouth.
I called the lawyer (in Arkansas) and talked to Skip (or Scot) . He was answering the phone because one of the office girls was pregnant and they were having a baby shower and Tab (the lawyer) was in Sweden (or Amsterdam) . He tried (without success) to put me on the voice mail twice and finally I got him to write down my phone number on a post-it note .
Soooooo First of all I think it is dishonest to have to pay for index ranking (one of the reasons that I am writing this site) . Second of all : Hey if you want to compete , do it with better service or better pricing not paid clicks. Third . If you want to compete with the guy competing for clicks , out bid him, don't try to empty his bank account by clicking him to death.
And Forth . For you the customer. Pay attention to this sort of thing. If a guy is paying $1.78 to get you to look at his site , guess who is going to pay that $1.78 . answer : the next guy that buys a disk. and he is going to pay for the other 9 that didn't buy and for the nimrod that is sitting in his boxers at 3 am developing carpal tunnel by repeated clicking. (Yea! and for sending a $13.85 Express letter to goodness knows how many "karaoke industry leaders".) well and Scot's salary too.
I may put the text of the note on later.
http://www.wired.com/news/culture/0,1284,68559,00.html
Above another really good artical about this click fraud thing.
PS Unabashed self promotion is fine with us.
PPS I really love jpgs of moveable letter signs that say something about
'karaoke
thursday night Texas Holdem' tourney Friday'
Recently Nutech has gone public and Lee really needs to concentrate
on some of the more profitable aspects of the business. Nutech is arguably
the largest US maker of karaoke disks. Not in dollars but in number of
disks. Probably 80% of the disks that you find on Ebay are Nutech products. The
copy write climate is also changing. Song owners are starting to be more
demanding about royalties and most Nutech products are in the lower price
range. And I think another thing is that that lower market is really saturated.
What will this mean to you ? Probably nothing. Will Nutech products miraculously
keep popping back up until the advent of mind actuated laser karaoke cubes?
Probably. (ALSO SEE STOCK MARKET QUOTE AT BOTTOM OF PAGE)
Ok here's the deal : I am going to build a site here that tells
everything in the world about Karaoke.
All of the manufacturer's information
All the disk sellers info
Everything you need to know about the disk makers
A list of karaoke bars and restaurants
I am in the business and know more about it than almost anyone that
I know.
Let me add that for a living I answer about 500 karaoke emails a day
for one of the karaoke sites (which will remain nameless) . I answer karaoke
questions all day long so I am thinking that I know what you guys want
to know.
Copy write information: You can use the text from this site as long
as you put a link to www.karokex.com and tell where you got the text. (Believe
it or not this has already come up.)
The most popular index (hint starts with a G and ends in an oogle) , lists all sorts of stupid things like computer forwarding pages and biology sites, programs that change your computer into a karaoke machine, midi file down load programs Anti-karaoke hate pages, giant companies that list links to everything in the world including karaoke.
A machine for $2000 that takes the voice off of a regular cd and is advertised as 'better than karaoke'
On one index there were only 4 actual karaoke sites out of the first 30 listings.
On Overture.com the first 40 listings were actually ads . Think about it . If a company is paying $2.68 per click for you finding their web site and only one out of like 10 searchers buy something, Who is going to pay the $26.80 . Two words: U R
Soooooo, any hoo the project is to actually do some human thought into a total karaoke page. I am now taking site suggestions via email , especially sites that I have missed. I am also looking for information about sites such as ownership specialties, your experiences with them etc. But I ask you not to tell anyone about the page right now as It isn't even close to being finished.
Well kind of. It seems that the Distributors always get the big head and want to make their own disks. (Like Prosing and Karaoke Warehouse) and the Manufacturers see the Retail stores and Distributors getting all that money for disks and so they started selling direct to the public (Everyone except Music Maestro) . Then the Retail stores start distributing to smaller stores so that they can get stuff cheaper and run their customers out of business. .
(I just got an email from www.karaokeus.com saying that the distributor, DJ Miller needs to be added to the list of distributors that only sell to dealers, Thank You Mrs. K)
Basically everyone does everything. Sometimes a store can get the disks cheaper from a Distributor than they can from a Manufacturer. And sometimes they can get the disks cheaper from the guy that makes them and the manufacturer cuts the throat of the distributor and undercuts them.
Chartbuster for instance has "home dealers" . These are the Retail store's customers that Chartbuster sells disks for less than they sell to distributors.
.... Please don’t send me any more disks on the auto ship, and make a point of erasing my credit card info from your systems.
Now ain't that a kick in the head? Thank you Norbert!!!
To be fair about all of this. I called my girl at Charbuster and she said that they never give free shipping on these orders. I asked the customer to send me a copy of the email and have not gotten it back yet.
I guess they just want to anger their dealers. This is another example of doing things with absolutey no thougt . At all. Their stupidity is only surpassed by their stupidity. Not only are they making dealers not want to sell their product but they aren't efficient enough to sell as cheaply as we do.
After I went to the trouble to show this customer the benifits of getting Chartbuster as a subsciption every month. And signing her up, Chartbuster not only tries to steal my customer but then tries to screw her by charging more money when you add on the shipping.
Thought question: Next time a customer looks like they might benifit from monthly new releases am I going to suggest Chartbuster? or am I going to recomend Stardisc, Sound Choice, Music Maestro, or Top Hits Monthly?
Just sounds like more headaches. She also says they ship by UPS, which is MUCH more expensive than the way you guys do it. If you took me off your auto-ship program, put me back on so I can get the newest disks. ... Like that old Waylon song goes, ”Be careful of something that’s just what you want it to be!” ... I’ll just stick with you guys! ....
Just heard from Melanie again, and she enclosed
the KJ discount price list, without any shipping information, of course.
In case you’ve not seen this, I’ll copy and paste if for you as a post
script. (These prices do not include shipping
or handling )
Here’s a copy of what she just sent:

Most Manufactures sell to end users but try to stay higher than their stores.
Below is a list of actual on-line places to buy disks. Again if you
can think of any that I have missed, please click
here and tell me as much as you know about the site, good bad or ugly.
Being on this list just means that they have a site and say that they say
that the sell cdg karaoke disks. (ie that it isn't something stupid that
has nothing to do with buying disks, or is one of those stupid relisting
sites (like this one :-)
Now having said that, if he is charging $40 for a $22.99 Sound Choice and $20 for Backstage ....... You have my permission to print this out and hand it to him. Hey local overcharger karaoke guy! Welcome to the nineties ! Get real !
Also while I am on the subject of not being a total karaoke jerk. Do not go to a karaoke bar and drink water. Tip your servers and order something that you have to pay for (Yes Diet Coke is fine)
Also we are going to place an order on each of these sites and tell you how it went. See which one got here first . Were there any surprises. How do they handle returns. What kind of packaging . Did we show up on any spam lists. any hidden charges. etc. etc. . Shipping date. Did they actually send the right disks. You know the drill.
It is my guess that many of the 'karaoke sites' are actually owned by
some guy that thought several cute names. I am going to attempt to find
out who is really whom. And list related sites together. (Also odd : almost
every karaoke business says that they are the worlds largest)
There are actually several different formats out there but the one you want is CDG. If anyone tells you to get a different format (DVD, Laser disk, VCD, Super CDG, CAVS, MIDI, Super K , etc. etc.) Write their name down in a little book. Keep this book handy and if anyone ever tells you anything, look it the little book. If the person's name is in the book, Ignore them!
CDG The only serious Format:
Actually if you just embrace this concept you
can skip the rest of this.
CDG disks came right after Laser disks. And because there are so many
CDG disks out there, they look like they are going to be the dominant format
for the foreseeable future. Any KJ or serious home singer or (karaoke store
for that matter ) that has been into karaoke for a while, has hundreds
if not thousands of CDG karaoke disks.
No new format offers a significant improvement over CDG.
The sound is already digital so you are not going to get better sound.
CDGs will play on any CD player.
There are over 20,000 different titles already in existence.
The words show up right on the screen if you have a cdg player.
There isn't a great outcry among users for live action video behind
the words (ok people actively don't want it)
There isn't a great outcry for more songs on a disk (Actually people
seem to be willing to pay the same for 10 song disks as they are for 20
song disks) Most people are buying a disk for one or two songs and wish
they had to pay for fewer songs on that disk.
There are millions of CDG players in the US. They are available for
as little as $29 .
Long story short : CDG has achieved critical mass. Everyone has a vested interest in not changing format because they already have a bunch of CDG disks. And there isn't a reason to come up with a new format because there is no added benefit that customers are looking for. (Ok there is a benefit that some manufactures and dealers would find in a new format but the customer don't want it PERIOD)
In the movie world VHS gave way to DVD in less than a month because DVD looks better and sounds better but again there isn't a corresponding benefit to some other new format in the karaoke arena.
Hint : if you don't know if your machine will play a cdg, go to www.doowop.com and order disk number "FREE" . It is a Sound Choice Christmas disk with like Jingle bells etc but the main thing is that it is a cdg disk by a major karaoke manufacturer that you can use to test your new machine. Doowop.com says it is free but I think they charge like $1 shipping (odd for a company that doesn't charge shipping) . Again if your machine, won't play that disk . Take it back.
VCD (the worlds most popular karaoke format)
Problem is we don't live in the world, we live in the United States.
VCD is the format of choice in China, Malaysia, Japan (you get the idea,
Pacific Rim countries) . I would venture a guess that there are like 10
times as many VCD disks in existence than all other formats combined. Yes
there are English language VCD karaoke disks. (and I might add there are
lots of American Movies on VCD) VCD disks are easy to copy on a regular
PC. I have heard that there are legions of street venders in Hong Kong
(or some place, I forget) selling $2 copies of everything from Rocky V
and Gone with the wind to Microsoft Word.
The English language VCD karaoke disks (Love songs, Love Story brands)
are really bad and the funny thing about them is that the background singers
have an almost comical oriental accent. (You know leaving out 'the' and
saying L for r etc)
Final thought . Your home DVD player will probably play VCD even if it doesn't say so on the box.
DVD (It's all going to DVD , Right ?)
Simple answer ...No
I remember having a long discussion with Jack (owner of Pro Sing karaoke distributors) about how DVD was going to replace CDG as the dominant karaoke format. I said 'ain't goon happen' but Jack assured me that DVD was the coming format. You would think that now that everyone has a DVD (If you don't Wal Mart has them for $29.95 now) that people would start buying DVD karaoke disks. Sound Choice, Music Maestro, Nutech and Priddis have all tried out 'blue screen' DVD karaoke disks. This is a disk that has the words and a blue screen behind them. Sales have been dismal on DVD karaoke disks.
Why?
Well for starts , nobody wants moving pictures behind the words. (Pioneer and Nutech have actual live action videos behind the words as do all the Pacific Rim DVDs) But I think the real reason is that so many people already have a huge inventory of CDG disks that they already are using. They don't want to have to put up with two players and they don't see the need to buy a new player that plays both format. There isn't any advantage to DVD over CDG so why have both or change. DVD disks COULD hold more songs but people don't seem to be willing to pay more money for more songs on a disk. And none of the karaoke disk companies are dumb enough to bring out a say 50 song disk.
But the most serious problem with DVD karaoke disks is the lack of disks . There might be 150 titles to choose from. Maybe. But there are at least 10,000 different CDG disks out there at this time. And what's worse there are 2 oe 3 new DVDs a month (if that many) and like 30 new CDGs released a month.
One more thought : Many better CDG disks (Sound Choice) have copy protection on them. This prevents you from loading them in a computer (the first step in copying). Since a DVD machine is actually a computer, these disks will not play in a DVD machine that also plays CDG. Sooooo before buying any machine, take along a CDG disk and try it.
www.doowop.com bought out all of the DVD disks that Pioneer had made and if you must see people running around behind your words they are now $9.99 (as opposed to the $35 when they first came out)
No but you don't want to. Here we have a serious case of the nat on the flee on the dog's tail waging the truck that the dog is riding in.
Getting rid of thousands of dollars worth of disks to get to use a $200 machine is the wrong answer. Take back the machine.
The person that sold you the dvd karaoke machine cheated you (and knows it) . Take it back. DVD karaoke is not the coming thing it is a dying thing. WWW.doowop.com has more DVD karaoke disks than anyone because they bought out Pioneer when they stopped making disks. BUT they actually only have about 100 dvd disks. This versus 8,000 cdg disks.
Again , I am sure there is a way to put your cdgs on dvd but that reminds me of the Olympic team from a small country that had their Gold medal bronzed.
Laserdisks
Believe it or not Pioneer still makes a karaoke player that plays Laserdisks along with CDG and VCD and also DVD. It sells for around $1400 .
Pioneer originally introduced karaoke to the US on Laserdisks. They sold for around $150 . You can still find them on Ebay and oddly enough around Army basses in Pawn shops. (Laserdisks for everything from Movies to Karaoke were originally sold in military PX stores)
Nikkodo and Nutech also made lasers and there are Korean and Japanese language laserdisks floating around. The videos on Japanese karaoke disks are all identical (and funny to American audiences) . They all start out with an attractive girl looking off into the distance or walking along between the cherry blossom trees. Next she is remembering when she was with her boyfriend. Pictures of them skimming stones, walking on beach, sitting in front of a raging fire , drinking wine etc. Final scene she is by her self (Obviously he has left the scene) and again she looks off into the distance.
I asked one of my Japanese customers why nobody noticed that these videos were all exactly the same and she asked me if I had listened to American country music lately.
Long story short:
Beta was a better format than VHS. CPM was better than DOS. Macs are better than PCs. 8 track tapes are much better than cassettes. If I invented a better ac electric plug. I mean a lot better. Nice big brass prongs that got 50% less resistance etc etc, nobody would be interested because it wouldn't fit into the little wall plugs that are already in their houses.
But in the world of formats the answer is always "Which format has the most program material" CDG remains the only actual answer.
Best karaoke machine?
JVC22 Now called the RSQ22
And if you buy one and it doesn't work , switch both switches on
the back to the left. All of the JVC karaoke machines sold in the US are
actually made for the Oriental market (Why yes they play CDG AND VCD) .
They come set up for 220v and PAL. (So switch the voltage and format switches
to the left ) Also you need to contact the place that you bought the machine
if you have warranty issues later as JVC won't even talk about karaoke
machines in the US.
I talked to the guy from RSQ today and he said that JVC is no longer
going to make the JVC22 as of this coming July. Now I have been hearing
this for about 3 years and believe me, as long as there is a market for
an item, it will be available. (My opinion)
Hey what about the RSQ SV222 ?
Same exact machine. As a matter of fact, when
you power it up, your TV screen says something about JVC.
What about that JVC triple tray?
No that isn't the best because it is more
money and less dependable.
But I want the three trays. (I am a professional you know)
Well the problem is that you can't cue up
drawers two or three while drawer one is playing.
But I really want the Pioneer V310g !!! How come it isn't the bestest
Karaoke machine?
The problem with the 310g Pioneer is that
is doesn't have a sensor on the cd tray. When some drunk puts a disk in
and pushes on the drawer, the unit breaks.
What about the Voco Pro?
The Voco Pro Machines are as functional and
dependable as the JVC but the JVC is nicer looking and has more features
for about the same price.
What about all the new brands of Chinese machines that are springing
up everywhere? (like the Sound Choice and Audio Stream and all the ones
on Ebay) ?
Well they seem to have more features and are
(or should be) cheaper but they don't hold up and many of them are software
based and can act really odd. Also be double dog sure that these pups play
cdg. Remember that VCD and DVD are the predominant formats in China and
they have boat loads of machines that don't really play CDG wholesaling
for under $30 . One other really odd problem is that machines that also
play DVD may not play better disks with copy protection (see above explanation).
Ok Wal Mart, Kmart, Cosco, Radio Snack, Sam's etc have thousands
of great looking machines and they have tape players and AM FM radios and
sell for like $15 isn't that the way to go.
Well yes , they are
fine . (especially for the price) But this section is about the best machine
and they are not the best machine. We in the karaoke industry are tickled
pea
green. That the mass merchants are introducing
the masses to karaoke. But you have to ask yourself "if I were buying a
home stereo would I pick something that looked like that?" As a matter
of fact you probably already have a nice stereo or good TV speakers and
don't need the cheap little Cassette, AM FM and dinky speakers on the unit
you are looking at.
One other consideration (now I have already
given you permission to buy the Kmart special ) is that the cheaper machines
may not play all of the disks . (JVC will play anything PERIOD) Chances
machines can be really picky about showing the graphics on CDG disks. Some
Memorex machines will play half of the Pioneer disks but not the other
half. And the really bad news is that these machines like the $23 disks
just fine but won't play the $5 disks. (like SGB, Nutech, Backstage etc)
An aside: At the place that I work (which again
remains nameless) one of the biggest things that I get email about is that
the customer bought a disk that they say won't show graphics. Well, on
further questioning it will play in brotherinlaws JVC but won't play in
their Memorex or Singing Machine. They think that we have bad disks . We
tell them to start a list of brands not to buy. And to return the disk
for a refund. (many karaoke disk sellers will not take them back PERIOD)
What I should say is for them to buy
a decent machine that will play all the disks. We learned real quick not
to do that because they are already hot because our disks suck.
But in all seriosody they will end up with thousands of dollars worth of disks and the machine was only $39.99 . The tail of the pup waging the truck that the dog is riding in . They are going to be stuck having to buy $20 disks instead of $5 disks . When you factor in the fact that the cheaper machines don't really last very long and that you might be saving $15 a disk. A trip back to Kmart to get rid of that cheap machine might be cheaper in the short long run.
(Ok let me digress further. This site is written in what my wife calls Victor stream of conscience format. I just write what I think of.)
We see a certain progression of this karaoke disease . Serious karaoke addicts (yes it is a progressive disease) start out with a Mass market machine with speakers in it and a press board back. They start buying either our ebay junk disks or the $4.99 and $5.99 .
They buy up all of the 'feeder disks as we call them' and say things like 'Hey why should I buy $20 disks when these $5 disks are just as good" . (I went to a several million dollar karaoke show room at the Treasure Island in Las Vegas, monitors everywhere, closed circuit cameras on the stage, costumes, mega watt speaker systems, a green room , auditions to get on the main stage etc . And they were using a $5.99 Standing Ovation disk)
When they have purchased about a hundred cheap disks, they are asked to bring their stuff to a party and by the way we need 'Red Neck Woman' or whatever. Well they get on Ebay and they check out our $4 disks and find out that they are mostly older songs. Out comes the old Visa card and they bite there lip and order a $22.99 Sound Choice Spotlight disk. HOOKED !!!
Now when they get up on stage in front of all
those relatives and start singing from the good disk they start thinking,
'Boy, the background music is a real band and not just a drum machine and
synth. : Wow, the tempo is right on this and it is in my key. Gee, this
makes me sound like I can sing. End of story. Now they get it . This disk
makes me sound like I can sing. If we sold a disk with just one song on
it that was the exact right song for their voice, they would pay $100 for
it . (I know that I would)
Singing is a very personal thing. (sort of
like buying false teeth that almost fit or just a small piece of sand in
your eye) Once a singer finds out about the better disks then they start
buying the better disks. Again we can see it in the buying patterns when
we print out a customer's disks that they have bought. They usually start
with Nutech and Backstage progress to like Chartbuster or whatever and
then end up sticking with Sound Choice Top Tunes and Pioneer. (and buying
a JVC22)
I remember a walk in customer (yes we have
a walk-in store) . He ask me how much it would cost to buy one each of
the Sound Choice 8000 series. I wanted to be polite so I got out the calculator
and came up with $13,000+ thinking that he would drop his jaw. But no,
he seemed to be ok with that and asked how much those lights over there
were.
Ok I will need two sets of those , how much.
$15,000 +
Will you take a check ?
Sure says I.
Dropping my casual air when I walked in the
office, I called the little bank in Buffalo trace Indiana .
"I have a check here form a "customers name"
.....
"Oh it's good " says she.
"Mame, you don't know how much it is"......
"Well it is good up to two Million dollars"
It seems that my this twenty year old had
just won $2,000,000 in the Indiana lottery (on a rub off none the less)
And the first thing he could think about was coming into our store and
buying one each of the Sound Choice disks. (now just for the record, WHEN
I win the lottery I am off to Vegas or the South of France , Hawaii Any
place but the Local Karaoke store. )
I bring up all this because this method of
buying karaoke disks really makes sense. Buying the best first and keeping
all one brand skips all the 'feeder' disks and the middle disks and since
he bought all the same brand , he is avoiding a lot of repeats song wise.
(also Sound Choice offers a $3 per disk rebate if you buy 100 disks at
the same time ((our guy didn't bother to get the $1,000 rebate after all
he had just won the lottery))
Yes he bought a JVC22. (Ok two, and a nice
SUV ((Not from us)) and later a PA system and later even started his own
karaoke store, which went out of business ....but I digress)
What about Voco Pro Wanders and Bravos etc?
They are just fine . And actually the only
choice if you need an all in one unit. (not as tough as the JVC but again
just fine)
I guess this is actually an extension of format but that section was getting a bit long. When Karaoke originally came out all of the disks had a singer singing the lead vocal. And karaoke machines had a little button that you could press to take the singer off of the disk. Some disks had the singer on the left track and some had him on the right and some had him exactly equal on both tracks so that the little button could look for a signal that was equal on both tracks and take that off. All this is really great if you have all the same brand of disk but in reality it becomes sort of a pain in the ......
Multiplex is the term for the little button that decodes the lead singer that is identical on both tracks and removes him. But now days most karaoke companies record each song twice . Once with the singer and once without. So track one is with him and track 7 is without. No actual multiplex but they sometimes still call it multiplex.
So if you really want some so so singer demonstrating the lead vocal
(Most people are trying to avoid "multiplex" not find it.) Here are some
of the brands to look for:
Sound choice 2000 and 3000
All of the Chartbuster 6X6 disks ($9.99 or $10.06) CB20000 ,
CB40000
(ok Chartbuster CB10000 gospel series is 4x4x4
one with a lead singer and background singers, one with just the background
singers and one with just the music)
Music Maestro MMMseries
The Pop Hits Montly disks
Disney disks
Stardisc Kids disks
Many of the Kmart type Pacific Rim CDG disks
Final thought. Lee at Nutech found that his Backstage brand was outselling his Standing Ovation and other brands, many of which were total old style multiplex (ie just one copy of each song WITH the singer on each track) So he just remamed all of the brands Backstage , without changing the actual recordings. So some of the lower numbers of Backstage are totally multiplex and there is this little guy singing on every track.
After Final thought. A multiplex machine (ma-3 $69 for instance) will
not only take the vocals off of a multiplex disk but believe it or not
will take the lead vocal off of a regular cd. (The Thompson 'better than
karaoke' machine does this really well and is $3000ish)
Answer (ok non answer)
Well , we actually have sold them . I purposely didn't want to include
them because they incourage pirating disks. I will say that we ordered
a few machines and were going to rent them but the customers that tried
to use them were very unhappy. I ended up selling them . The guy that got
the one returned it and another guy bought it. He had the devil's own time
figuring out how to use it and erased the hard drive. CAVS was very nice
and re recorded it but we were out shipping.
I don't know . I don't like them but they may be just fine. That is why I really didn't want to include them . What would I say about them ? Yea or nea? I don't want to recomend something that could get a person arrested or that they might have problems getting fixed etc. On the other hand I wouldn't want to blast something that would turn out to be the greatest thing since fried tomatos.
You notice that we skillfully avoid any talk about burning disk or copying
. Or copywrite laws etc

Ok I have tried to place an on line order for over 15 minutes here
and I can not figure it out. Perhaps you are supposed to call in the order.
There is a 'see our new site' pop up but it says that you can't place an
order on it. There seems to be a great push to get you to buy packs or
equipment / disk combos here .
I finally called in and shipping was going to be $4.99 on a Sound
Choice disk. I ask for sc8877 and the clerk told me that Top hits monthly
is a better disk. :-)

Well they don't give an address or city on either site and I tried to
do a reverse search on the phone number (no luck). The web design company
is in Texas.
On the bottom of one of the two sites there is mention of WGGW Holdings

Quote from site!!! "Karaoke
WOW! has one of the most complete line of Karaoke Laser Discs for sale
anywhere in the world!" This is not to say that they don't offer
a full line of cdg, dvd etc.
They recommend calling in the order on an
800 number . There is also an online order form that you can type in your
address and credit card info along with a list of items that you want to
buy. They figure the charges when they receive this form and send
a confirmation email.
I was under the impression that Karaoke Wow
had been around longer than 1998 but that is what whois.net says. I know
that it was one of the first online stores on the net. Recommended.

I talked to the guy that originally started this site. He said that
he was really surprised that Karaoke.com hadn't been taken (nor realizing
that he had misspelled it. ) But he kept getting orders so he kept shipping
them. Aceskaraoke.com is also a misspelling of Acekaraoke.com and is pointed
to kareoke.com . I wonder if he also has dowop.com .
Who would have thought that you could make a career out of not being
able to spell?

Odd: I got an Email saying that I had won a free disk AND a $5 gift certificate from Totalkaraoke.com . I did get on the site but didn't sign up for anything and didn't give my email address (as far as I remember) I guess I should send in for the free disk ($2 shipping). If you have the same experience, email me about it.
Ok when I tried to get the free disk (and $5 gift certificate) I had to log in . And when I said that I had forgotten my password, they emailed me a password that I would have used. So obviously I had logged in at an earlier time.
I purchased a $4.99 disk and put the $2 shipping charge (for the free
disk) in my shopping cart. Total $6.99 and then it added $5.55 shipping
. Now I put in the secret code for my $5 gift certificate. The final price
was $7.54 ($2 shipping for the free disks and $5.55 shipping for the $4.99
disk. I did this on Aug. 3 04 Let's see when I get what.

Wrong Price!!! They charged
me $10.54 not $7.54 . No mention of the $5 gift certificate or the $2 shipping
on the "free" disk. (Important note : Karaoke companies are staffed by
humans and hey, they do make mistakes . The important thing is how
is it handled and what are the ongoing policies.)
Aug 9 04: I called about the price problem
and talked to "Jeff". He offered an instore credit
and I suggested that an on credit card refund
might be more appropriate. A $5 credit was applied
to my credit card . (It should take a few
days to show up. I will check.)
So far I am really $2 better off than promised
because they didn't charge the $2 for the free disk.

MICHELLE MONET was born in Brooklyn, New York but was raised and began her musical career in Denver, Colorado. She picked up the guitar at the age of 8 and discovered she had an innate ability to play, sing and compose music. In 1979 Michelle met and teamed up with songwriter Archie Evans Jr. and began composing music. (They have since collaborated on over 50 songs.)
In 1985 after singing around the Denver area as a solo artist with her guitar Michelle began producing and starring in concerts with her band to benefit various charities she believed in. In 1988 Michelle also began teaching Vocal Workshops for other aspiring singers and also taught private vocal and guitar lessons.
On a trip to Las Vegas in 1989 Monet was spotted singing at a hotel by an agent who asked her to audition for the part of BARBRA STREISAND in the Las Vegas show LEGENDS IN CONCERT agent was overwhelmed by Michelle’s amazing vocal ability and also her uncanny resemblance to Streisand. Michelle won the part and has since been performing her Tribute to Streisand to critical acclaim worldwide in major Showrooms and theaters from Lake Tahoe, to Atlantic City, Montreal, Canada and even Moscow and Leningrad Russia.
-Some of Michelle’s reviews over the years include:
"Only two people can belt out type songs… BARBRA STREISAND and MICHELLE
MONET’
WHOOT MAGAZINE, Atlantic City
"Possibly the most TALENTED YOUNG LADY in the country today?"
Doc Winter, Glenn Miller Orchestra Leader
"NOTHING LESS THAN PERFECT!..A dead-on performance"
Atlantic City Courier Post
Over the years Michelle has continued to compose, record and perform her own original music which recently was the idea behind her show entitled "She, Streisand & Me, Monet" which incorporates the best of two worlds…her TRIBUTE TO STREISAND show along with her moving and memorable original songs. After a recent concert of "SHE & ME" Michelle was chosen to compose all the music for and be co-musical arranger or the upcoming motion picture "WINTER GAMES" written by Stoddard White Jr. of Lake Tahoe. Her musical arranger/partner on this film will be MICHAEL WARREN best known as Musical Director/guitarist for DIANA ROSS, DONNA SUMMER, HELEN REDDY, RITA COOLIDGE and the Musical at ranger for Grammy and Academy Awards shows.
