Professional Karaoke Software
Trying to buy a microphone… and I need help!!?
I’m looking for a fairly inexpensive vocal/instrumental microphone of semi-professional quality that’s good for indoor recording. I have no idea where to start or what exactly to look for. If I use a generic computer microphone or a cheap karaoke microphone, I get static, delay, the sound quality is awful. I’m definitely in need of an upgrade.
Also, what do most musicians on a budget record with? Is editing and fine tuning as simple as buying some software for your home computer or is it absolutely necessary to have high-tech studio recording equiptment?
Really what I’m getting at is… what kind of microphone is good to use, and will it still sound good if I plug it into the microphone jack on my laptop and record to something like WavePad?
For home recording, I recommend a condenser mic or ribbon mic. ( http://www.homerecorder.com/products.php?cid=2 ). Condenser mics are the most popular among professional and home recordists and prices start anywhere from under $50 to well in the thousands. If you are looking to get good quality sound out of your mic, you need an audio interface ( http://www.homerecorder.com/products.php?cid=38 ) designed for professional recording. Generally, the stock sound card or interface that comes with a laptop is not designed for recording. It’s simply a cheap way to get sound in and out of your computer. This is most likely why you get terrible sound and static. Audio interfaces designed for recording have very low noise (virtually inaudible) and deliver great results. Nowadays you can connect an professional audio interface to your computer via USB or Firewire. Then you can connect your condenser mic to your audio interface, and there you have it. A pro or semi-pro setup, depending on the mic and audio interface you use. There is also a new condenser mic that can be connected to your computer via USB without even needing and audio interface ( http://www.homerecorder.com/product.php?pid=312 ) . Only a few of them exist at this time, but i’m sure that will change in the future. Hope this helps!
