What do I need to set up a small home recording/karaoke studio?

I have a karaoke machine which I use to sing on and record to my PC, but honestly the sound quality SUCKS. I’m not a professional singer, just do it for fun on the side, but I’d like something that can produce some nice sound quality. If anybody could tell me just the basic equipment I need to play instrumentals and record my vocals over them. Do I need a mixer? What type of microphone? Do I need studio speakers or can I just use headphones to hear the music and my vocals being recorded? Please, if someone knows a basic studio recording setup I’d really appreciate the help. Thanks!

A Karaoke machine will obviously give you cheesy results as you’ve experienced. If your looking to have any kind of professional results, you’ll definitely want a mixer and a decent Microphone. I would recommend Mackie mixers and Shure Microphones. I’m not sure your budget, but you’d probably want some reference speakers if your going to be doing mixes and need accurate reproduction of your sound. Mackie also makes powered reference monitors which are pretty decent. Oh yeah as for headphones, You’d want to wear those while your recording your vocals as you don’t want the live sound coming out of the speakers while your recording if it’s in the same room.
