Is it possible to make a flash audio player without a flash communication server?

I would like to make an audio recorder that pulls a instrumental from a mysql database and then plays it and as it is playing a person can can record their voice over the song like an online karaoke. I am wondering if this can be done in flash. I would like to do it in flash so that I can place it on myspace and some other sites. But if it can’t be done in flash then I guess the next best thing would be a java applett. What do you think? Is it possible or would it just be better to do it in java
