Karaoke Channel Online

What is the device I need to record drums?

For the past few years I’ve been running a really low budget recording setup at my house. For drums I have previously been using nothing more than karaoke mics placed around my drums and and running them into three lines in on small PA/keyboard amp and then into my computer.

I decided I wanted to step it up a bit, so I went ahead a purchased a pretty nice drum mic set a while back. So now I need something with at least 7 different mic channels. At first I thought I needed something like a mixer with that amount of channels that I could use just like my small pa/amp and run and run a cable from it to my computer. But the ones I’ve looked at online don’t seem to have a line-out or a phones jack or anything to run it to the computer… Why is this?

Could someone link me to the exact kind of device I need, or a mixer that has a way to actually use it to record?

Hi…

Several companies make small mixers/control surfaces that would do just fine. Usually the problem with the smaller ones, not enough mic inputs. I have yet to dive into the world of pc based recording. A lot of my friends have, and the results they get arent the greatest. One reason why. They have a pc they have bought at a place like best buy or circuit city. Its a pc designed for networking, not music production. Theres an old saying I find to be true. Use the right tool for the right job. Any mixer should do the job. They all have headphone jacks in them. Heres what I dont like about that scenerio. You are placing multiple mics on the drum kit, then, have to have the mix right, as your recording only 2 tracks, right and left. Leaves NO flexibility at mixdown. Common practice when recording drums, 1 separate track for kick, snare, and each of the toms. You can get decent results with recording a separate track on the kick drum, then use 2 overhead condensor mics for the rest of the kit. Still, thats 3 tracks. I would not advise using anything such as a pa/keyboard amp for recording. Any type of amp has a lot of noise in it.

Im still kind of old school when it comes to recording. Up until last year, was using a 24 track reel-reel professional recorder. Ive finally semi-retired it due to the high cost of tapes for this machine. (around $175.00 per tape) For what you can spend on getting your pc properly set up for recording, I would recommend the Tascam 2488 MKll. Ive seen these as low as 599, and they have an 80gb hard drive, 8 mic inputs, and onboard processers. You can start a project, and finish it right to cd with its cd burner. The learning curve for ME has been a bit steep on this, but find it to be a great alternative for the time being while I set up my Apple pro studio.

Hope this has helped, and good luck.
