Liability insurance for small DJ / Karaoke business?

Can you name some companies where I can get liability coverage for a mobile DJ business? I assume there are probably a few companies that would specialize in something like this.

Small operation, probably only going to be doing 6 or 8 shows a year max (last year did 4 shows and 2 of them were “freebies”), not a lot of income, mostly doing it for fun. Concerned that someone is going to trip over a mic cord, I might damage something (not mine) while setting up, can’t possibly guess what might happen – that’s what insurance is for, right?

Tell me of your experience with your insurance company (if you have one).

I pay less than $300 per year for liability insurance. My insurance company places certain requirements on my services. For instance, I have to have a contract with an indemnity clause or the insurance won’t cover me. I’ve never had to use my insurance though.

I suggest checking out the two big national DJ associations. The national association of mobile entertainers (NAME) and the American Disc Jockey Association (ADJA). Each of them has an approved insurance provider. There’s also a company WeDJ that has access to insurance as an addon to their regular packages. You might try them also.

Any of these organizations might also get you some more GIGs.

As a disclaimer, I’m a member of the American Disc Jockey Association and I’m part of the local chapters leadership so that’s obviously the association that I prefer. I’m also a client of WeDJ.
