Can a restaurant/lounge refuse service to a customer without giving a reason?
An eighteen year female patron to a restaurant/lounge was told one evening upon arrival that she could not be served until she spoke to the owner first. Consequently, the night before she was told by the karaoke DJ, “You don;’t really think that you’ll be singing here tonight, do you?” This DJ happens to be her ex’s bestfriend. This guy has verbally insulted her many times in other places she patronizes and and deliberately blackballs her. He also takes credit for getting her 86′d and takes pride in accomplishing that. Is my friend’s civil rights protected by the UNRUH ACT and Ralph Act? We live in a small city where everyone knows each other. This guy single handedly ruined my friend’s reputation which has caused her great emotional distress at a time when she was already diagnosed with depression. She had to leave the country for four months to recuperate. She’s back now but eleven months later, this whole thing still doesn’t sit well with her. What can she do about it?
From your description she wasn’t refused service but was asked to speak with the owner first…. Could be the owner heard some bad comments about her and wanted to hear her side of the story…
By the way, where are you that they allow 18 year olds in bars????
